Barbados is embarking on an ambitious journey to combat the detrimental impact of plastics on the environment over the next decade. The National Action Plan to End Plastics Pollution was recently unveiled at Warrens Tower II on June 26, signaling a significant step towards a cleaner and greener future for the island.
Minister of the Environment and National Beautification, Green and Blue Economy, Adrian Forde, emphasized the urgent need for legislation to address the proliferation of single-use, petrol-based plastics. With a staggering 500 tons of single-use plastics being sold monthly and ending up in landfills and scattered throughout the nation, decisive action is imperative.
The National Action Plan outlines five key policy interventions that aim to make a substantial impact in the fight against plastics pollution. These strategies include:
- Phasing out single-use plastic bottles by promoting the installation of water refill points
- Gradually eliminating single-use plastic bags
- Removing other single-use plastic items like takeaway food containers, straws, and lids
- Implementing ‘Extended Producer Responsibility’ to encourage source separation for recycling
- Utilizing downstream measures such as enhanced waste collection and rigorous enforcement against illegal dumping and littering
Minister Forde emphasized the importance of instilling a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the environment among citizens. He urged everyone to champion sustainable practices to safeguard the planet for future generations.
